Gary Borger has been active and inventive in the fly fishing world for over 50 years. Many of us have had the pleasure of meeting Gary at FFF programs nationally or locally, and have treasured the fly that he gave us or the casting lessons that helped us on the stream.
Gary Borger earned a BS in 1966, and an MS in 1968 from Penn State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1971. He is Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Wisconsin Campus in Wausau where he taught for 28 years. During his career he offered Botany, Zoology lab, Natural History Photography, Writing in the Sciences, Dendrology, Ecology, Taxonomy, and other topics. He was presented with the Teacher of the Year Award on two different occasions. Gary Borger was a professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin Center, Wausau.
Gary has been very active in conservation efforts from early in his career, and his work brought him the first Federation of Fly Fishers Lew Jewett Memorial Life Membership Award, in 1979. In cooperation with the Federation of Fly Fishers, Gary produced the environmental video, "Where the Trout Are." Gary is also a member of the FFF Casting Instructor Certification Program Board of Governors. He has been a major participant in FFF Conclaves tying flies, giving programs and casting lessons. Above all, Gary is a teacher.
He's an active member of the Outdoor Writer's Association of America, Midwest Field Editor for Fly Fisherman magazine and Fly Fishing Columnist for North America Fisherman. His five best-selling books on fly fishing include Nymphing, Naturals, The Borger Color System, The Fabulous Bighorn, Designing Trout Flies, and Presentation.
His 12-video fly series "Skills of Fly Fishing" covers all aspects of fly fishing including separate videos on “Designing Flies with”: soft hackles, stiff hackles, hair hackles, fur dubbing, and feather dumping. Gary pioneered fly fishing video instruction with his "Nymphing" video in 1982. Since then he has appeared in four videos for the 3M Company. He is also consultant, lecturer and a designer of the Weinbrenner Ultimate Wading Shoe, Gary Borger reels by STH, Gary Borger Signature Fly Lines and Gary Borger fly vests and more.
