Handout Guidelines
Whitefish Conclave 2008

First posted June 16, 2008 Last updated June 16, 2008

All of the demonstration tiers are urged to have a handout for Whitefish. The handout project is a work in progress and your feedback is requested (post your comments on the FFF Forum; see the note about the Forum, below).

This page is also a work in progress, so check back prior to finalizing your handouts. As of today, June 16, we have a prospective sponsor, but we are waiting for the deal to be finalized.

WHAT SHOULD GO INTO THE HANDOUT? The content of the handout is up to you. Several handout examples are available online; the index of handouts is here. View it from the observer's viewpoint: what would you want in a handout if you were watching a demo tier making a great fly you want to tie? It can be as simple or as complex as you like, one page or several.

HOW MANY SHOULD I MAKE? If you are going to print your own handouts, you should make about 25-50. How many to make is anyone's guess; I have had handouts in the last few years and given away only 15. How many you make is up to you. If you print your own and you are commercial, you may put a 1 inch ad on the bottom of the first page (see an example).

I DON'T WANT TO PRINT MY OWN If you are NOT going to print your own handouts (and you think that I have time on my hands!), and you want me to print it, pray that we get a sponsor. Format your handout as a Word document, if you can. This will allow me to handle them easily. Leave a one inch space at the bottom of the first page for the sponsor ad. (It is anticipated that it will be a premium fly shop.) The images should be jpgs, and can be line drawings or photographs. Then email it by July 15 to Nelsondl followed by the "at" sign followed by Pacbell.net. Please put in the subject line the word HANDOUT followed by your name. If you do more than one, HANDOUT1, etc.

I WOULD LIKE YOUR FEEDBACK There is a discussion thread on Handouts on the FFF website. Put your cursor over the Fly Fishing tab (in blue, top right), then slide it over Forums. Slide down to Fly Tying and you will see the discussion on Handouts. Please visit this site and post your comments.
