Welcome to Dr. Nelson's

Gluscosamine/Chondroitin JBJS Page

First posted October 23, 2001 Last updated July 19, 2005

This article is from the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. It is written for orthopedic surgeons, so it may be a bit hard to follow. If you would like to read it, it is available for purchase from the JBJS or you can read it at the MGH Medical Library (925-7393). I wanted to provide this reference so that you have more information upon which to make your decisions, and felt that the opinions expressed in the offical orthopedic journal have special weight. I know the first author; he is a straight shooter.

This article examines some of the evidence for the effectiveness of oral glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. There is little to no evidence that there is a physiologic explanation for their effectiveness, poor quality support for clinical evidence for their effectiveness, but enough suggestive evidence that further research is a good idea.

Remember the admonition from the Patient Education Links Page: the Internet has a lot of information, much of it incorrect. I have reviewed the sites that I have linked to, and have only linked to sites when I personally know the surgeon who posted it, or am a member of the organization that posted it. However, I may not agree with all that is on that site, and it may have changed since I reviewed it. If any of the information is not consistent with what I have told you, please download the material and bring it in.
