Patient Statement
Wrist Fusion

This page has been written by patients of mine who had surgery and who wanted to share their experience of surgery with other patients who are thinking of having a similar surgery.

The statements are unedited unless indicated. No two patients will have identical experiences, so expect some variation. However, I thought that you would like not only MY perspective on what you might experience (I have told you this during your visit), but also THEIR perspective on what they actually experienced. If you have any questions, please let me know. - Dr. Nelson

My name is Maricela Benavides, I am 36 years old. I have worked at Bell Carter Olive Company for nine years. In 2005 I had a work injury in my left hand, which made me feel a lot of pain and discomfort in my left wrist every single day. Medication used to be of little help, and I was getting very tired and bored with my pain, so I was referred by my doctor to Dr. David Nelson. He suggested the best he could do for me and my uncomfortable pain was a wrist fusion.

When he told me about surgery (wrist fusion) I was terrified and thought I would never be able to use my hand again and that my life would be totally different. However, with lots of confidence and trust in my doctor and hoping to get better, I decided to go for it.

Now after 8 months of having my wrist fusion surgery, my life has improved radically. I do not need to take pain medication and I have been able to return to work a few months ago.

I still have to get used to certain limitations which I am sure will improve with time, but I now feel useful, satisfied and happy for me and my whole family.

If I will ever face the same situation I will do it again with out hesitating. I became a happy person again.
